Heat Pumps, Solar PV and Part L 2026
Practical guidance for residential projects in England.
The 2026 requirements put low-carbon heating, high energy efficiency and on-site renewable electricity at the centre of new-home design. The applicable Approved Document and individual project determine the technical solution.
Heat pump planning
Coordinate plant position, access, distribution temperatures, hot-water storage, controls and commissioning responsibilities. The approved guidance addresses building-services efficiency, heat-pump controls and heat loss from low-carbon heating systems.
Solar PV planning
Consider usable roof geometry, shading, structure, electrical coordination, inverter location and a realistic system specification. The 2026 amendments add a functional requirement for on-site renewable electricity in new dwellings and buildings containing dwellings; guidance describes compliance routes and exceptions.
Assess the whole dwelling
Fabric, glazing, ventilation, heating and renewable generation interact. Share the proposed package with an assessor before ordering equipment, then update the calculation if the installed specification changes.
